Neville’s Cross

For this build, the brief required the demolition of the existing garage to accommodate a new workshop and sunroom extension to the property’s rear. To maximise the natural light from the garden, the family wanted to create an indoor-outdoor living space adjoining the open-plan kitchen/ dining room.

Various options were explored with the client, leading to a unique design response meeting their tastes and requirements. The unusual form of the extension ultimately led to a beautiful array of internally exposed timber, creating a feature space for entertaining or relaxing beside the log-burning fire. From the exterior, the extension showcases the upstairs balcony and draws one’s eye out across the garden.

As the property is situated within the Durham Conservation Area, such additions were pursued with the home’s natural surroundings in mind, to ensure the result honoured the local area.
