‘One Acre’, located on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park, is a highly bespoke and sustainable 5-bedroom new-build dwelling that was named LABC’s ‘Best Individual New Home 2019’.
By liaising extensively with the client, we were able to understand their requirements and aspirations and produce a tailored design response that delivered a modern interpretation of a large traditional farmhouse. For example, we ensured that the internal layout facilitates spatial flow for ease of wheelchair access, and specialist care equipment could be fully integrated.
A further major design consideration was to utilise (or foreground/feature) extensive glazed gables framed in Douglas fir, and these became a distinctive feature of the property. We also carefully orientated the property to achieve a strong connection with the scenic landscape farmland beyond.
A feature balcony creates usable external space, and allows for full appreciation of the views, but also enables shelter all-year round to promote wellbeing and recovery. Due to the exposed and often somewhat hostile climatic of the site, the construction of the building was also specifically designed to offer protection – it has triple-skinned walls and large wood burning stoves, one of which is dual facing (to heat both the open-plan kitchen and living area).
We were also conscious to use a carefully restrained material palette of locally sourced stone, Douglas fir, and slate and white plaster. Such choices create a modern aesthetic while enriching the property with the character of traditional craftsmanship. The brief also focused on the quality of the interior spaces, and we achieved the desired sleek and harmonised finish by featuring exposed hand-crafted timber throughout the interior and exterior.
Finally, due to the meticulous considerations behind the building’s construction, the property surpasses current building regulations. By drawing from renewable energy sources, the build achieves a significantly reduced carbon footprint, a feature which achieved a highly commended air permeability rating and LABC award.
“The meticulous attention to detail and quality of the architects’ construction drawings together with a persistent drive for quality throughout the build sets this home apart from the rest”
– William King, Main Contractor
