PHP completed the bespoke design of the University Catering Facility in conjunction with other Architectural Services as part of a wider project for Durham University, following on from the development of the main Palatine Centre in 2012.
We worked closely with the Catering Department to develop a facility that fulfilled specific requirements for flexible operational needs while offering a state-of-the-art installation commensurate with the iconic design of the surrounding building.
Full interior design coordination was offered in conjunction with the detailed design and development of the building itself, including kitchen facilities and services to the rear, while still delivering the vision for a modern front-of-house servery and high-quality dining experience.
The facility incorporates flexible service stations distributed along a curved servery counter on the ground floor, opening out onto a large, glazed double-height rotunda with a feature staircase. Above this is located a mezzanine formal Dining Area and Coffee Bar with galleried views to the courtyard beyond.
In conjunction with specialist catering suppliers, we designed and detailed all finishes and furniture to coordinate with the installation; 3D models and photo-realistic imagery were offered to convey the intentions and to develop the proposals in line with our client’s requirements.
